MEET OUR TEAM

  • Dana started the journey at ILA in February of 2012 and brings with her more than 15 years of experience in leadership, academic management, advising, compliance and journalism. Dana supervises ILA’s daily operations, class schedules, and curriculum and class plan implementation. Dana also leads the Academy’s accreditation process with the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation (CEA), making sure CEA’s standards are maintained throughout the academy’s daily operation. Dana is the Principal Designated School Officer (PDSO) with SEVIS, completed her TESOL Core Certificate in 2015, and has earned a Master’s Degree from Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business in Organizational Leadership. Dana also serves on the board of a non-profit organization, and provides coaching and training on Female Leadership

  • Marly joined ILA in December of 2016, shortly after moving to Washington D.C. from Florida. She graduated from Florida State University where she earned her Bachelor of Science in International Affairs with a specialization in Middle Eastern Studies. Marly has come to us with several years of combined experience in International education, and non-profit development. Being Cuban American, she is especially passionate about assisting students with their transition into American culture. Marly oversees school marketing, growth, and development. Marly also works in resource development for a veteran non-profit organization.

  • Carly joined ILA in July 2018 and brings 8 years of experience in education, training and administration.  She graduated from Christopher Newport University located in Newport News, VA in 2010 with a BA in Sociology and a minor in Psychology. Between living overseas and working with international students for the past 5 years, she has become fluent in French, developed a passion for international education and helping students reach their full potential.

  • Laurie is a recent transplant to Virgina and joined ILA in November of 2017. Her childhood curiosity of language led her to study both English and vocal music at the undergraduate level. She received a Bachelor’s in English and Music from Pacific Union College in California. Her graduate work was done in Vocal Pedagogy at Westminster Choir College in Princeton, and her TESOL certification was obtained at Seattle Pacific University.

     

    Her teaching career has spanned the gamut of English, ESL, choir, and drama at the K-12 and community college levels. She has taught and sung and eaten her way around the world and is always looking for reasons to use her passport.

MEET OUR INSTRUCTORS

The International Language Academy of Washington D.C. ensures that all instructors are well qualified and have all required training. All instructors are required to have at minimum a bachelor’s degree in teaching English as a second language or related field, be TESL certified, or hold at least 3 years of experience in Teaching English as a second language. All instructors should have native English proficiency; knowledge of other languages is a plus.

  •  Senior Instructor

     

    Debra joined ILA in January 2015. She has her Masters in Education and over 15 years of experience in adult education in ESL, GED/Adult Basic Ed. & Workforce Development at the adult education, community college & university level.  Her career spans across three states (New Mexico, Maryland, and Virginia) and the District. She has been adjunct faculty/staff at the University of New Mexico, Highlands University (NM), Webster University (NM), Montgomery Community College (MD), Frederick Community College (MD), Columbia College (VA), Virginia International University & The Graduate School of D.C.  

  • Ms. McMahon has more than 9 years of experience of teaching ESL in community-based programs, private language schools, and community colleges.  She taught academic ESL at Kentucky Community and Technical College and at Nashville State Community College.  She also edited numerous research papers and program handbooks written by foreign-born academics. Ms. McMahon received her bachelor’s degree in Russian Language and Literature from George Washington University and her TESOL certificate from Tennessee Language Institute.

    She has traveled extensively in the US and Europe and enjoys reading, gardening, and spending time with her two grown sons.

     

     

  • Banan Malkawi specializes in adult learning in the fields of language and international studies. She spent her formative years in Jordan, returned to the United States for high school and college. She earned a BA in International Studies and Linguistics from the College of  William and Mary, and an MA in Religious Studies from the University of Jordan. Her career spans working in the fields of journalism, translation, research publications, and foreign language and cultural training in academic and professional settings. She has called Northern Virginia home for more than 23 years, and loves hiking in  Virginia’s parks and spending time with family and friends. 

  • Raven Blakeney joined ILA in late 2019, she just graduated from Old Dominion University with a Bachelor’s Degree in English Linguistics and a TESOL certificate. She’s from Woodbridge, Va and is very enthusiastic about foreign languages and cultures.

  • Born in Copenhagen Anthony grew up in an international household: his father was English and his mother Danish.  He was a kid in Brazil before moving to the USA where his family settled in Boston.   His multicultural background inspired Anthony to continuously learn about other countries.    He received a BA in Modern European History at Harvard and later an MA in Latin American Studies from Johns Hopkins and a finance degree at London Business School.  After many years in international business based in London, Anthony returned to the US to embrace his passion for teaching.  Anthony is a certified ESL instructor and has been teaching English for over two years.

  • Farhad (Fred) Shakerin joined ILA in January 2020. He is bilingual and has been teaching languages, including ESL, at the International Language Institute in Washington DC and the Washington Language Center in Virginia, and has worked with many private students. Before teaching, he was a Project Manager for three years, and an Assistant Director for eight years. Farhad was born in Los Angeles, CA, and was raised both in the United State and abroad. He enjoys sharing his knowledge with others and considers himself a lifelong learner. Outside of the classroom, he enjoys meditation, yoga, and cycling.  

     

     

  • Senior Instructor

     

    Kay Bailey is an ESL teacher with over 10 years of experience in the USA and abroad. She has helped professionals and adult learners prepare for higher education acceptance and the IELTS. Kay earned her Masters in Education from the California State University at San Bernardino and her BSBA in International Business in North Carolina. Her research interests include: literacy development, second language acquisition, and adult education. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her family and friends, volunteering in the community, and travelling. Kay calls California home but joined ILA in September 2017.
